The fashion industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards sustainability, this is a fact that the Institute of Positive Fashion (IPF) Forum, held by the British Fashion Council, couldn’t ignore. So on April 18th 2024, industry leaders gathered in London to discuss the roadmap to achieve a circular fashion ecosystem by 2030.
Dr. R. Sri Ram, Founder & Chairman of Bags of Ethics by Supreme Creations, delivered a compelling talk on the importance of clean production and green growth. He emphasised that sustainability has gone mainstream, driven by consumer demand and eco-conscious choices.
Circularity: A Global Tradition
Dr. Sri Ram highlighted the circular nature of many cultures’ practices, like the saree in India, which transforms into various items throughout its lifecycle. He stressed the need to embrace such traditional practices globally.
Challenges and Opportunities
While upcycling presents challenges like collection and sorting, Dr. Sri Ram sees vast opportunities. In the U.S., about 17 billion kilograms of clothing are discarded annually, with only a fraction being recycled or upcycled.
A Call to Action
To make sustainable practices viable, he called for innovations in automation and government support. He urged the industry to focus on textiles made from 100% natural or 100% synthetic fibres to simplify the recycling process and reduce environmental impact.
