In just 3 months face masks have become an essential item of our wardrobe, seen as a fashion statement for some of us.
As they’re now mandatory on public transports in England (and in shops from July 24th), a lot of us are searching for the perfect face coverings to wear in those hot summer months. It’s understandable that you look for something fashionable AND respectful of the environment. And because at Bags of Ethics we don’t do single-use plastic, we’re here to help you find beautiful sustainable options!
Can I buy facemasks online?
Online is probably where you will find the most fashionable and trendy facemasks, plus it’s the most socially distanced way to shop.
So why not take this opportunity to support small local businesses and handcrafters? Etsy is THE creative marketplace to unearth the most original and innovative face masks in the UK.
But before rushing into purchases, here are a few tips to online shop face coverings: First make sure they are made out of at least a 2 layer tight weave cotton or satin. They should ideally include a nose strip (this little piece of flexible wire will enable you to easily adjust the mask fabric to give it a snug fit over the bridge of your nose, as it’s an area where virus can be transmitted from). Make sure you’ll get as much use as possible out of this face covering – as it’s an hygienic item, it cannot be shared or given to someone else when you’re tired of it, and generally, you won’t be able to return it, so do think twice!
Where can I buy sustainable facemasks?
At Bags of EthicsTM we believe that Covid-19 should not be an excuse to litter and waste disposable surgical facemasks endlessly. First because those are still in short supply at the moment and desperately needed by healthcare workers (yes – even now), but also because medical masks are generally made from non-biodegradable materials, such as polypropylene (which takes at least 50 years to start breaking down into smaller pieces!).

That’s why we launched our own range of washable face coverings, which can be reused up to 50 times. The cotton panels are organic (Global Organic Textile Standard certified) and are 100% compostable, as the inks used for the printing are water-based – the durable elastics can also be recycled!

Face coverings are a super versatile product and don’t really fit in any “box”, which is why you’ll be able to find them in almost any type of shop! Fashion stores, concept stores, and a large majority of supermarkets!
