Recognising Innovation in Sustainable Fashion and Responsible Production
We are thrilled to announce that the Bags of Art & Design project has been awarded Gold at the prestigious Better Future: Milan Design Award 2025! This recognition highlights the project’s innovative approach to sustainable fashion and its commitment to responsible production, environmental responsibility, and functional design.
Launched in collaboration with Bags of Ethics, Pentagram, and Cass Art during the London Design Festival, Bags of Art & Design is a pioneering initiative that redefines the intersection of art, design, and sustainability. The collection features twelve bespoke tote bags, made from upcycled deadstock cotton, each designed to cater to the specific needs of artists. With thoughtfully engineered pocket systems, the bags accommodate essential art supplies such as notebooks, A1 folios, palettes, and brushes, seamlessly blending practicality with aesthetic appeal.
A standout feature of the project is its innovative use of upcycled materials, including repurposed deadstock fabric. By giving new life to textiles that would otherwise end up in landfills, the initiative reduces textile waste and creates unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that celebrate the individuality of artists. The resulting collection showcases distinct textures and hues, demonstrating how upcycling can play a pivotal role in contemporary design. This evolution of design is also reflected in the Cass Art tote bag, which features shades inspired by the rich history of artists’ pigments, such as Prussian Blue, Cerulean Blue, and French Ultramarine.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the project emphasises the importance of ethical production. Crafted by an 80%+ female workforce in Pondicherry, India, the initiative supports ethical employment practices, empowering women with sustainable livelihoods. This holistic approach integrates ecological, social, and economic factors to create a meaningful and lasting impact on both the environment and the community.
The limited-edition Cass Art tote bag, introduced at the launch event and priced at £14.95, further reinforces the commitment to responsible design and accessibility. Beyond offering a functional solution for carrying art supplies, these bags also raise awareness of sustainable practices in the art and design industries.
Winning Gold at the Better Future Milan Design Award 2025 underscores the significance of the Bags of Art & Design project in shaping the future of sustainable fashion and design. It is a testament to the power of thoughtful material sourcing, sustainable production, and innovative craftsmanship in creating products that are both functional and environmentally responsible.
