Valentines day is all about showing your love to your favourite people, however, this year, we also want to make sure that we show some love to our planet. Over a billion valentines’ cards are sent each year, many covered in glitter and plastic making them un-recyclable and contributing to our issues with waste. This year we want to change this, and make sure our gifts and celebrations are as planet-friendly as possible, meaning that wasteful wrapping paper, cards, and single-use plastic gifts are out, and sustainable, handcrafted, and planet-positive products are in.
Here are our top sustainable gift ideas for your loved ones this Valentines day:
1. Bake your way to someone’s heart.
The traditional valentines’ chocolates may be a delicious gift of love, however, the plastic trays that they come in are not very planet friendly. Swap out chocolate for some home baked goods to help limit waste and go one step further by buying the ingredients from a zero-waste or bulk foods store! Here are some of our favourite valentines’ bakes:
Wallflower Kitchen Cookie Pops – these vegan cookie pops are planet friendly but also just the cutest!
Janes Patisserie Cookie Bars – easily made vegan for those wanting a more sustainable recipe, these cookie bars have got us drooling over them!
Hidden heart cake – this one is for those who want a bit more of a challenge but is a gorgeous way to show someone just how much you care.
2. Ditch the Glitter.
Glitter is made up of tiny microplastics that will never fully decompose and is therefore terrible for the planet. Swap out glittery cards for handmade, glitter-free versions, or send your loved ones an e-card to further save waste. Here are some great ideas for glitter-free, homemade cards:
3. Sustainable pampering
Why not treat your loved one to a pamper this valentine’s day? But sustainably? These products are great for those who want to look after the planet whilst also looking after their significant other.
Vegan cruelty free pampering set – a full set of vegans, cruelty free pampering products, perfect for the special lady in your life.
Men’s vegan pamper set – Or one for the special man in your life!
4. Flowers are for life, not just for valentine’s day.
Whilst they may be pretty, flowers generally come wrapped in cellophane (plastic), ribbons, and paper, all of which will go straight into the bin. If flowers are the way you show your love, how about buying some living ones in the form of a plant? This way your loved one can enjoy them for a lot longer than just a few days. This plant is even heart shaped?! What’s more romantic than that?
5. Ditch the wrapping paper.
Don’t wrap your gifts in wasteful paper or bags that are just going to get chucked in the bin! Instead use our sustainable, planet friendly, reusable wrapping bags to give the gift of a protected planet to your loved ones.
