This Saturday 14th of November, we, and millions of people across the world will be celebrating Diwali. This Indian festival is the festival of light, lasting five days and celebrated during the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. Diwali symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness and good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. During Diwali, people wear their finest clothes, illuminate the interior and exterior of their homes with diyas and rangoli, perform (Lakshmi puja) – worship ceremonies of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, light fireworks, and partake in family feasts, where mithai (sweets) and gifts are shared.
This traditional Indian festival will be celebrated by our wonderful digital and manufacturing teams in Pondicherry, India, and we wish them a very happy and prosperous Diwali.
As a business, we find it important to remember our cultural roots, and remind ourselves of every individual who is affected by and affiliated to our business.
Our motto is PEOPLE BEHIND THE PRODUCT – we want to remember each and every person who went into helping to bring our products to life, and this includes recognising and celebrating their culture. As an ethically accredited manufacturer, people are incredibly important to us.
All of our products are manufactured in our own ethically audited factory in Pondicherry, South India, by a team that is 90% female.
his team is made up of wonderful women, who form a community in their town, who support each other not just in the workplace, but in every aspect of their lives. We believe in empowering women and giving them the means to provide for themselves and their families – many of these women are the main breadwinners of the families and have found a personal autonomy through their time at Supreme.
These women are at the very beating heart of our business, and so we do our best to pay them the gratitude and recognition that they deserve.
The core ideas at the centre of Diwali are also very relevant in this current climate. This year we have experienced an unprecedented turn of events, and our lives as we know them have changed completely.
The symbol of light is something that we should all keep in mind during these difficult times – light will prevail, and good will always conquer evil. We will get through the hard times, and we will come out the other side as stronger and better people for them. In the current political climate, we are also reminded that good will always trump evil, and we are left with a hope for change and progression as we go into 2021.
We at Bags of Ethics and Supreme Creations wish everyone who is celebrating Diwali a prosperous and beautiful day filled with family, love, and light. We wish anyone, no matter what your faith, race, gender, or geographical location a life full of light, love, and laughter, and remember, light, good, and knowledge will always overcome evil.
