Meet Children’s Clothing Goddess: Celia Munoz
This October we are celebrating the Hindu festival of Durga Puja, a festival that pays homage to the Hindu goddess, Durga, and during this time we aim to celebrate and showcase the achievements of our business partners, staff, and customers – all of whom we believe are total goddesses in their own rights.
We are bringing you the stories behind some of the most amazing women across our business, and as our final instalment of the goddess guide we have a snippet from Celia Munoz, founder of traditional Spanish childrenswear label, La Coqueta, which she launched in 2013. La Coqueta has now got 3 stores in the UK and is also sold in Liberty and Harrods as well as their own website which sells worldwide.
Stay True to Yourself
Can you tell us a little bit about your business and what you do?
La Coqueta produces beautiful children’s garments from 0 to 10 years of age, all proudly manufactured in Spain. I am the proud founder and creative director of the brand and responsible for all of the design side of the business as well as imagery. We work with small family run workshops who specialise on traditional technique and we have a very long standing relationship with them. We work so closely together than in a way they feel pretty much like family!
Who or what inspired you to start it?
What inspired me to start La Coqueta was my love for children’s fashion and the fact that at the time I had five children under the age of five, they were the perfect demographics to start my own children design fashion company. I had so much fun doing it and it allowed me to work on my own terms, very hard! But adapting to my young family.
Have you faced any challenges as a woman in business?
I wouldn’t say I am facing them now that we are a lot more established but I definitely felt that being a mother of a big young family and not having any experience in retail made it particularly challenging at the very beginning, when starting La Coqueta. I felt it was difficult to have credibility at times. I never felt being a woman as such as a problem when starting La Coqueta.
What makes you feel like a goddess?
My husband! Being with my family at home not having to worry about anything else outside it. When our customers compliment what we do, it is always very rewarding and highly motivating.
If you could give other women one tip to help them embrace their inner goddess, what would it be?
Accept who you are and ensure people around do too by being yourself. There is little more rewarding that feeling you stay true to yourself and what you believe in.
