Learn why the Sustainability, Environmental Achievement & Leadership Award highlights measurable contributions to sustainability in textiles.
In an era where sustainability is a business imperative, true innovation lies in turning waste into opportunity. Bags of Ethics is proud to have partnered with British Airways to do exactly that, transforming thousands of retired Julien MacDonald uniforms into high-quality, reusable products designed for long-term use.
This pioneering project has been recognised with a SEAL Business Sustainability Award 2026, marking it as a leading example of circular economy innovation. The SEAL Awards (Sustainability, Environmental Achievement & Leadership) honour organisations and initiatives that deliver measurable, verifiable environmental impact. Winners are selected by an independent panel of sustainability experts, environmental advocates, and business leaders who assess projects based on impact, innovation, and scalability.
Rather than sending over 16,000 legacy uniforms to landfill or incineration, British Airways partnered with Bags of Ethics to give these materials a second life. At Bags of Ethics’ 80% women-led facility in Pondicherry, India, uniforms were carefully disassembled, buttons, zippers, linings, and fabric panels preserved to maximise material value. Larger panels were transformed into picnic blankets, while smaller off-cuts became luggage tags and document holders.
Beyond product creation, the project extended its impact through donations of additional materials to schools and charities, as well as a creative competition with UK-based art students. The winning submission, a sculpture made from debranded uniform buttons, offered a powerful artistic reflection on reuse and renewal.
The results are tangible and meaningful:
- Over 8 tonnes of textile waste diverted from landfill
- More than 10,000 upcycled products created
- Ethical employment and upskilling opportunities for a predominantly female workforce
For Bags of Ethics and British Airways, receiving a SEAL Award signifies more than recognition; it validates a shared commitment to embedding circularity into global supply chains. It demonstrates that sustainability can be designed into products from the outset, without compromising quality, functionality, or brand integrity.
As Dr. R. Sri Ram, Founder of Bags of Ethics, explains:
“This project has been transformative—from product design and supply chain innovation to ethical production. We hope it serves as a blueprint for circularity in business across industries.”
