At Bags of Ethics, purpose is not a trend—it is the foundation. In a recent interview, our Chief Executive, Smruti Sriram OBE, shared insight into what it means to lead with intention, scale impact globally, and redefine modern leadership.
Smruti’s approach is rooted in a simple but powerful belief:
“Social entrepreneurs really are the heart and soul of communities.”
This philosophy shapes everything we do—from ethical manufacturing to empowering communities and collaborating across industries.
A Monday that reflects a mission
For Smruti, leadership begins long before the workday.
Her Mondays start at 5:20am with strength training, followed by preparing her son for school—before transitioning into leading a global organisation. From London to Pondicherry, her day spans continents, time zones, and teams.
“My phone is essentially my office when I’m not at my desk.”
This constant connection reflects the scale of Bags of Ethics’ work—collaborating with global brands, coordinating production, and ensuring that every product aligns with both creative and ethical standards.
Where design meets sustainability
At the heart of Bags of Ethics is the belief that sustainability and design are inseparable.
“A product can be desirable and responsible at the same time.”
Through partnerships with global brands and creatives, Bags of Ethics proves that ethical products can be both beautiful and functional. From reusable materials to long-lasting design, every product is created to reduce waste while enhancing everyday life.
This intersection—where aesthetics meet responsibility—is what drives lasting consumer connection.
Collaboration as a catalyst for impact
One of the most defining moments for Bags of Ethics came during the pandemic.
Working alongside leading designers and organisations, the team produced reusable cotton face masks—raising over £1 million for charitable causes including the NHS and children’s charity initiatives.
“It was a dream… to raise so much money during the pandemic.”
This project demonstrated the power of collaboration—not just as a business strategy, but as a force for good.
Empowering communities through ethical manufacturing
True impact goes beyond products—it lies in people.
At our Pondicherry factory, women make up 90% of the workforce, reflecting a deep commitment to empowerment and inclusive growth.
Smruti’s leadership prioritises opportunity, skill-building, and long-term community development—proving that ethical manufacturing can transform lives at scale.
The leadership principles that matter most
Smruti highlights two essential qualities for modern leaders:
1. Humility
“Great leaders know when to step back and let others shine.”
Recognising the strengths of others and creating space for them—is key to building strong, innovative teams.
2. Collaboration
“How can we bring a melting pot of people together where there is a total win-win-win situation?”
By connecting people, ideas, and opportunities, meaningful impact becomes possible.
Looking ahead: inspiring future generations
For Smruti, the future belongs to bold, purpose-driven thinkers.
She champions a world where entrepreneurship is encouraged, collaboration is second nature, and leadership is rooted in values.
“Future generations should feel empowered to be bold leaders, strong communicators, and collaborative thinkers.”
A new definition of success
At Bags of Ethics, success is not measured solely by growth—it is defined by impact.
Through thoughtful design, ethical practices, and community-driven leadership, we continue to build a future where business truly becomes a force for good.
And as Smruti reminds us, the most meaningful growth is the kind that benefits everyone.
